Nigeria set to host 9th Lagos International Badminton Classics
Nigeria is set to welcome badminton players from around the world for the 9th Lagos International Badminton Classics, with 166 athletes from 27 countries expected to compete in the four-day tournament.
The championship is scheduled to begin on August 26, 2026, at the National Stadium in Lagos, as Nigeria prepares to stage another major international badminton event.
President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih, expressed confidence in the country’s readiness, describing the level of international participation as encouraging.
Orbih noted that the tournament’s US$20,000 prize purse has further enhanced its appeal and growing profile on the international badminton calendar.
He said the financial rewards would provide additional motivation for the participating players to produce their best performances throughout the competition.
The BFN president also commended the Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, Rt. Hon. Phillip Shuaibu, and the institute’s management for making the venue available and supporting preparations for the event.
Orbih assured that the federation would work to deliver a well-organised championship capable of further enhancing Nigeria’s reputation as a host of international badminton competitions.
