Nigeria wheelchair basketball team heads to Angola for Commonwealth Games Qualifiers

Nigeria’s Wheelchair Basketball Team is set to take its quest for continental glory to Luanda, Angola, as they depart for the 2026 IWBF Africa 3×3 Championship scheduled for March 22 to 27.

The tournament doubles as a crucial qualifying event for the Commonwealth Games, placing added significance on Nigeria’s campaign as they aim to secure a spot on the global stage.

An eight-athlete squad will represent the country, following an intensive two-week closed training camp held at Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja from March 8 to 21. The camp was designed to fine-tune tactics, build cohesion, and prepare the team for the high demands of the fast-paced 3×3 format.

President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, Seyi Johnson, expressed strong confidence in the team’s readiness and ability to deliver.

“We are confident in the quality, resilience, and determination of our athletes. They have prepared well, and we are optimistic that they will deliver positive results that will secure Nigeria’s qualification for the Commonwealth Games,” Johnson said ahead of the team’s departure.

Beyond competition, Johnson подчеркed the importance of the team’s participation as a statement of Nigeria’s growing commitment to inclusive sports development. He also acknowledged the role of the National Sports Commission in ensuring a smooth and effective preparation phase.

“We appreciate the leadership of the National Sports Commission in creating an enabling environment for us to prepare adequately. With this level of support and dedication from our athletes, I am confident Nigeria will make the nation proud on the continental stage,” he added.

With the 2026 Commonwealth Games set to take place from July 24 to August 1 at the SEC Centre in Glasgow, all eyes will be on Luanda, where Nigeria’s para-athletes will be aiming to turn preparation into qualification.
