Nigerian stars impress across leagues as Asisat Oshoala, Ashleigh Plumptre, Francisca Ordega reach podium in Saudi Arabia
Nigerian players were prominent across several leagues over the weekend, with Asisat Oshoala, Ashleigh Plumptre, and Francisca Ordega all finishing on the podium at the Saudi Women’s Premier Challenge Cup.
Oshoala reached the final with Al Hilal, scoring a hat-trick on the road to the showpiece, but ended on the losing side as Al Nassr claimed a 2–0 win to lift the trophy. Goals from Ruth Kipoyi and Clara Luvanga settled the final in Al Nassr’s favour.
In the third-place match, Plumptre and Ordega responded to semi-final disappointment by helping Al Ittihad secure the bronze medal. Al Ittihad fought back from two goals down to draw 2–2 with Al Ahli before winning 3–1 on penalties on Saturday.
In Italy, Shukurat Oladipo started, and Rinsola Babajide came off the bench as AS Roma booked a place in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals with a 4–1 away victory over Lumezzane. After Giada Burbassi put the hosts ahead, Roma hit back through Marta Pandini, Manuela Giugliano, and a brace from Evelyne Viens. Roma will face city rivals Lazio over two legs later in January.
In Turkey, Flourish Sabastine was named in the starting line-up as Fenerbahçe strengthened their grip on top spot in the Women’s Super League with a 3–0 win over Giresun. Ece Türkoğlu, María Paula Salas, and İpek Kaya were on target. Elsewhere, Oluwatosin Demehin’s Galatasaray lost 1–0 to Chioma Olise’s Trabzonspor, with Natalia Oleszkiewicz scoring the decisive goal. Fenerbahçe remains four points clear at the summit, while Galatasaray stays second on goal difference.
In Portugal, Christy Ucheibe featured in defence as Benfica was held to a 1–1 draw by Sporting CP in the Liga BPI. Nycole Raysla opened the scoring for Benfica before Telma Encarnação equalised from the penalty spot late on. Benfica remains unbeaten and top of the table, five points clear.
In France, Jennifer Echegini was not included in Paris Saint-Germain’s squad for their goalless draw with Paris FC, while Rasheedat Ajibade remains sidelined as she continues her recovery from injury.
