Samuel Ahmadu appointed SWAN National Deputy General Secretary

Samuel Ahmadu has been appointed National Deputy Secretary General of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), following the conclusion of the association’s 2026 National Triennial Delegates Congress in Kaduna on Friday.

Ahmadu, a veteran sports journalist, media strategist and administrator, brings extensive experience in sports reporting, football administration and strategic communications to the national leadership of the association.

He currently serves as Special Assistant on Media to the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Honourable Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, where he is involved in the commission’s media, public relations and strategic communication activities.

His appointment as SWAN National Deputy Secretary General adds another dimension to a career spanning journalism, sports administration, media consultancy and public-sector communications.

Ahmadu is the Editor of SavidNews and Nigeria Football Newspaper and previously worked with Goal.com for over seven years as an African women’s football correspondent, covering women’s football extensively across Nigeria and the continent.

In football administration, Ahmadu previously served as a member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Women’s Football Committee and currently serves as Media Director of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL). He also works as a Media Consultant to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Before his elevation to the national SWAN leadership, Ahmadu served as Secretary of the FCT SWAN Chapter, where he was actively involved in the chapter’s administrative and professional development activities.

His emergence at the national level comes at a significant period for SWAN, with the association seeking stronger institutional recognition, improved welfare for sports journalists and greater participation in the governance and development of Nigerian sports.

The Kaduna congress also produced a new national executive leadership led by Isaiah Kemje Benjamin (JP), who was elected President. Nyong Bonny Silas emerged as Deputy President, while Ikenna Okonkwo was elected Secretary General. Amusan Olufemi Ayorinde became Treasurer and Ijeoma Nwante Financial Secretary.

The five Vice Presidential positions went to Samuel Gangwaja for the North East, Zaharadeen Saleh for the North West, Azuka Chiemeka for the South South, Ikemefuna Asika for the South East and Ayodeji Ogunsakin for the South West.

Ahmadu’s appointment represents a convergence of his extensive journalism experience, sports administration background and growing expertise in public-sector strategic communications as he takes on a new responsibility at the national secretariat of SWAN.

His new role is expected to see him contribute to strengthening the association’s administration, stakeholder engagement and advocacy for the professional development and welfare of sports journalists across Nigeria.
