President Tinubu hails Flamingos after historic FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup triumph
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Flamingos following their historic 2-1 victory over Japan in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The President described the achievement as a proud moment for Nigeria and the African continent, noting that the Flamingos had become the first African team to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
In a congratulatory message, Tinubu disclosed that he watched the final alongside First Lady Oluremi Tinubu after returning from official engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.
“Our young girls have conquered the world, made history and brought immense honour to Nigeria and the African continent,” he said.
The President said he had followed the team’s impressive campaign throughout the tournament and recalled their promise to bring the trophy home after defeating Brazil in the semi-finals.
He praised the players for fulfilling that promise through courage, discipline and belief, adding that their triumph went beyond football.
According to Tinubu, the victory would inspire millions of young Nigerian girls to dream big, compete against the best and aspire to achieve excellence in their chosen fields.
He also congratulated the players, coaching crew, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), National Sports Commission (NSC) and everyone who contributed to the historic achievement.
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I salute our world champions. You have written a glorious new chapter in our nation’s sporting history.
“Nigeria celebrates you. I celebrate you,” the President added.
