Russia coach questions Nigeria’s squad selection after 3-3 Super Eagles draw
Russian national team assistant coach Nikolai Pisarev has claimed that Nigeria used their international friendly against Russia to give fringe players an opportunity to showcase their talents to clubs in the Russian Premier League (RPL).
Pisarev made the remarks after the Super Eagles recovered from a two-goal deficit to earn a dramatic 3-3 draw against Russia in their October 6 international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod.
Nigeria entered the encounter without several established stars, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi and Calvin Bassey, creating opportunities for less-experienced players to feature.
The absences prompted head coach Eric Chelle to turn to a depleted squad, with nine players making their senior international debuts during the encounter.
Pisarev challenges Nigerian players to seize opportunity
Speaking in comments reported by Russian outlet Championat, Pisarev suggested that the Nigerian players had an opportunity to use the international fixture to attract interest from Russian clubs.
“And you know, Nigeria’s second team has arrived… You know what to do? Show your mettle here in the RPL. Sell yourself.”
He added: “Their first team is doing just fine. Osimhen, Lookman and company, they’re doing just fine.”
The remarks appeared to contrast Nigeria’s experimental selection with the team’s more established first-choice players, many of whom were unavailable for the friendly.
However, the match also provided Chelle with an opportunity to assess the depth of his squad and evaluate emerging options ahead of future international assignments.
Super Eagles stage late comeback
Despite the limited availability of regular starters, Nigeria produced a spirited second-half response after appearing to be heading for defeat.
Kelechi Iheanacho put the Super Eagles ahead in the 10th minute, but Russia fought back through Lechi Sadulaev and Matvey Kislyak to take control before Aleksey Miranchuk extended the hosts’ lead in the second half.
With Nigeria trailing 3-1, substitute Peter Edokpolor reduced the deficit in the 78th minute to give the visitors renewed hope.
Teenager Abdullahi Umar then helped complete the comeback by providing the stoppage-time assist for Akor Adams, who scored the equaliser to secure a 3-3 draw.
The late recovery highlighted the contributions of some of Nigeria’s less-experienced players, particularly Edokpolor and Umar, who played important roles in the closing stages.
Nine players make Nigeria debuts
Chelle handed senior international debuts to Samuel James, Isaac James, Stephen Michael, Wilfred Igor, Chibuzo Nwoko, Vince Osuji, Peter Edokpolor, Abdullahi Umar and Umar Abubakar.
The friendly offered the newcomers valuable exposure against a senior international side and gave the coaching staff an opportunity to assess their readiness for future assignments.
Pisarev’s comments have drawn attention to the possibility that players from Nigeria’s experimental squad could use the exposure to attract interest from Russian clubs.
There is, however, no confirmation that the Super Eagles’ selection was made specifically to facilitate transfers to the RPL. The match was an international friendly, and Chelle had been forced to work around the absence of several regular players.
For Nigeria, the 3-3 draw provided a chance to assess emerging talent, while Pisarev’s remarks added another talking point to a contest that ended with the Super Eagles recovering from a two-goal deficit
