Rwanda to host landmark U16 Afrobasket Championship

Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, is poised to host the 9th edition of the biennial FIBA U16 Afrobasket Championship, marking a significant milestone as it is the first time the country will hold this prestigious event.

The tournament is scheduled to occur from July to September and will feature Africa's most promising young basketball players competing for a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup, with the top two teams securing automatic entry.

Historically, Egypt has been the most successful nation in this competition, clinching five titles in the years 2009, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2021.

Other notable past champions include Angola (2013), Mali (2017), and Guinea, who emerged victorious in 2023.

The U16 Afrobasket has evolved into a platform for rising stars to showcase their talents and for regional rivalries to intensify, solidifying its status as a significant event in Africa's basketball landscape.
