Akingbemisilu and Obazuaye secure gold as Nigeria continues to excel at ITTF World Para in Jordan
Faith Obazuaye and Bolawa Akingbemisilu have contributed two gold medals to Nigeria's medal count at the ITTF World Para Future event in Amman, Jordan. They claimed victory in the Women’s Class 9-10 and Men’s Class 4-5 singles competitions, respectively.
Nigeria's medal tally increased further as Abiola Adesope earned a silver medal in the Men’s Class 9, while Isau Ogunkunle and Kehinde Lawal also secured silver in their respective categories.
Kape Oputa, a bronze medallist from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and a former Commonwealth Games medallist, finished with bronze medals in both the Men’s Class 9 and Women’s Class 4-5 singles events.
Akingbemisilu achieved a narrow 3-2 victory over his fellow Nigerian, Ogunkunle, to win the Men’s Class 4-5 title, while Obazuaye triumphed over Lawal with a score of 3-1 to take the Women’s Class 9-10 championship. In the Men’s Class 9 final, Adesope was narrowly defeated by Iurii Nozdrunov, finishing with a silver medal.
Agunbiade, who lost to Nozdrunov in the semifinals, earned a bronze medal, while Oputa also claimed bronze after a close 3-2 defeat to Rusul Al Waeli from Iraq.
With the singles competitions now complete, Team Nigeria is set to focus on the doubles events, with aspirations of securing additional medals to establish themselves as the top team in the tournament.
On the first day of the competition, Tokyo 2020 Paralympic bronze medallist Olufemi Alabi achieved Nigeria’s inaugural gold medal in the Men’s Class 10.
The Nigerian delegation, comprising eight members—five men and three women—is in Jordan to accumulate ranking points in preparation for the African Championships later this year. Sponsored by the National Sports Commission (NSC), this marks their first significant competition of the year and their initial international appearance since the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The team is under the guidance of coaches Nosiru Sule and Gbenga Olanipekun.
