SWAN National Convention commends Ogun State, charts path for improved Sports Festival hosting
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has praised the Ogun State Government and the National Sports Commission (NSC) for their successful organization of the 22nd National Sports Festival, while also presenting important recommendations for future events.
Following its National Convention, which took place alongside the Gateway Games 2024 in Abeokuta, SWAN expressed gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun and the citizens of Ogun State for their dedication to sports development and the provision of high-quality facilities for the 37 events held during the games.
The communiqué was endorsed by Chimezie Anaso (SWAN Anambra), Samuel Ahmadu (SWAN FCT), Segun Giwa (SWAN Ondo), and Ikenna Okonkwo, the Secretary General of SWAN.
In a statement released after the convention, the association also commended the leadership of the NSC, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, for their innovative efforts that improved the festival's organization, including the introduction of the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) category and enhancements in logistical planning.
SWAN further acknowledged the digitization of the media accreditation process, which it noted facilitated smooth coverage and better communication during the multi-sport event.
The Convention unanimously expressed confidence in SWAN President, Comrade Isaiah Benjamin, following his legal victory that reaffirmed his leadership, calling the result a triumph for the association's integrity. Delegates also encouraged the president to be gracious in victory and to persist in efforts to unify the organization.
Nevertheless, the Convention raised several points aimed at enhancing future editions of the games. These included concerns regarding logistical issues stemming from the widespread distribution of competition venues, which led to delays and fatigue among athletes. It recommended that host states centralize venues more effectively in future editions.
It also highlighted irregularities in journalistic coverage, urging improvements in this area for subsequent events.
