Samuel Ogazi smashes games record to win historic Commonwealth 400m gold
Nigerian sprint sensation, Samuel Ogazi stormed to gold in the men's 400m, leaving the rest of the field trailing in his wake as he crossed the finish line in a new Commonwealth Games record, becoming the 2026 champion in spectacular fashion.
History makes the achievement even more remarkable. The last time a Nigerian athlete won a medal in the men's 400m at the Commonwealth Games was in 1994, long before Samuel Ogazi was born. On that occasion, the late Sunday Bada claimed bronze, standing alone as Nigeria's only medallist in the event for over three decades.
Now, Ogazi has rewritten the record books, becoming the first Nigerian man ever to win the Commonwealth Games men's 400m title.
Speaking after his historic triumph, the national record holder said:
"It feels good to make such history for Nigeria. I've always told myself, 'Samuel, you have to put Nigeria on the map.'"
His victory is another milestone in an already outstanding career:
