Super Eagles set to defend Unity Cup in London
Nigeria will return to London in May with one mission to defend their Unity Cup title as the 2026 edition of the four-nation tournament brings together India, Jamaica, and Zimbabwe from May 26 to 30.
The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed on Thursday that the Super Eagles will headline the competition as defending champions, following their dramatic triumph in the last edition where they edged Jamaica 5-4 on penalties after a pulsating 2-2 draw at the Brentford Community Stadium.
Now, in its fourth edition, the Unity Cup continues its tradition of celebrating nations with strong diaspora ties in the United Kingdom. Once again, Nigeria and Jamaica enter as favourites, backed by pedigree, ranking, and a growing rivalry that has added spice to recent meetings.
Zimbabwe and India complete the lineup, with the latter’s inclusion marking a historic milestone. It will be India’s first appearance in the competition and their first football tour of England in over two decades — dating back to 2002 when Bhaichung Bhutia led the side, including in a memorable clash against Jamaica.
Their participation is expected to energise the large Indian community in the UK, adding a new layer of cultural and sporting significance to the tournament.
The competition will follow a knockout format, with semi-final winners advancing to the final, while the defeated sides battle for third place.
For Nigeria, the stakes go beyond silverware. The tournament offers a valuable platform to sustain momentum, fine-tune squad chemistry, and integrate key players as the Super Eagles continue to rebuild and refocus after missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Jamaica will be driven by the pain of last year’s final defeat, while Zimbabwe and India arrive with ambitions of making a statement on one of football’s most diverse stages.
