Victor Osimhen inspires Super Eagles to AFCON 2025 semifinals
Nigeria delivered when it mattered most. Against a stubborn and well-drilled Algeria side, the Super Eagles combined power with precision to claim a commanding 2–0 victory and book their place in the semi-finals of AFCON 2025.
The opening 45 minutes were a test of patience. Algeria, compact and disciplined in midfield, frustrated Nigeria’s attacking intent despite the constant menace of Victor Osimhen, Akor Adams, and Ademola Lookman around the penalty area. The Fennecs relied on quick transitions but rarely threatened Stanley Nwabali, ensuring the contest remained finely balanced at the break.
The game swung decisively moments after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Osimhen rose above his markers to meet a pinpoint Onyemaechi cross, powering a header beyond the goalkeeper. His fourth goal of the tournament finally cracked Algeria’s resistance and tilted the tie firmly in Nigeria’s favour.
Ten minutes later, the Super Eagles struck again, this time with ruthless efficiency. Osimhen turned the provider, threading a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Akor Adams, who showed composure beyond his years by rounding Luca Zidane and slotting into an empty net in the 57th minute. At 2–0, the contest was effectively settled.
Algeria pushed forward in search of a response, committing more numbers to attack, but found no way through a disciplined and well-organised Nigerian defence. Nigeria, by contrast, controlled proceedings with maturity, managing the tempo, and closing down spaces with authority.
Clinical after the break and composed throughout, the Super Eagles march into the last four looking every inch genuine title contenders.
This will be Nigeria’s 16th AFCON semi-final appearance, with hosts Morocco standing between the Super Eagles and a place in the final.
