Will Eric Chelle join Super Eagles November camp for crucial AFCON 2027 Qualifiers amid U-23 role clash?

Nigeria head coach Éric Chelle faces a potential scheduling challenge as preparations for the November 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Tanzania coincide with the Olympic Eagles’ two-legged U-23 AFCON qualifying encounter against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Olympic Eagles are scheduled to play DR Congo in Lubumbashi on Friday, November 13, before hosting the return leg at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on November 17.

Nigeria head coach Éric Chelle is expected to join Nigeria’s senior national team camp on Sunday, November 8, as preparations gather momentum for the crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Tanzania.

Chelle is currently overseeing the Olympic Eagles’ preparations for their U-23 AFCON qualifying encounter against the Democratic Republic of Congo but is expected to switch attention to the senior team ahead of the November international window.

The Franco-Malian tactician has been managing both national teams, with the Olympic Eagles preparing for a two-legged encounter against DR Congo while the Super Eagles face Tanzania in their quest to revive their AFCON qualification campaign.

Nigeria will host the Taifa Stars at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, November 13, before travelling to Dar es Salaam for the return fixture on Tuesday, November 17.

The Super Eagles are under pressure to collect maximum points after an inconsistent start to their Group L campaign.

Nigeria opened their qualification campaign with a 2–1 victory over Madagascar in Uyo but suffered a damaging 3–0 defeat away to Guinea-Bissau in September, leaving them with three points from their opening two matches.

Guinea-Bissau currently lead the group with six points, while Tanzania have one point. However, the East Africans have already secured automatic qualification for the 2027 tournament as co-hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda.

Chelle will therefore be expected to use the November fixtures to strengthen Nigeria’s position and keep the Super Eagles firmly in contention for the remaining qualification ticket.

“Chelle is expected to join the Super Eagles camp on Sunday after concluding his assignment with the Olympic Eagles, as attention shifts fully to the Tanzania AFCON qualifiers,” an anonymous team source told SavidNews.

The coach’s transition from the Olympic Eagles also comes against the backdrop of a scheduling challenge, with both national teams having their respective qualifying fixtures on November 13 and 17.

The Olympic Eagles are scheduled to face DR Congo in the first leg at the TP Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi on November 13, before hosting the return leg at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne four days later.

The overlap means Chelle cannot personally oversee both teams during the two matchdays, leaving the Nigeria Football Federation with the responsibility of ensuring adequate technical leadership for the U-23 side.

Meanwhile, Tanzania have already named a 24-man squad for the double-header and are expected to arrive in Nigeria on November 8 to begin their preparations in Uyo.

With the visitors having an early start to their preparations, the Super Eagles will be keen to assemble their squad quickly and make the most of the limited time available before the first encounter.

The November fixtures represent an important test for Chelle and his players, who must deliver results to strengthen Nigeria’s chances of reaching the 2027 AFCON in East Africa.
