Nigeria midfielder Alex Iwobi has praised Calvin Bassey’s leadership qualities at Fulham, highlighting the defender’s communication and vocal presence as key attributes that make him an effective captain.

Bassey has taken on the captaincy at Craven Cottage this season in the absence of regular skipper Tom Cairney, who has been sidelined by injury.

The Nigeria international has worn the armband during Fulham’s opening Premier League matches, taking on increased responsibility within Marco Silva’s squad. 

Iwobi, who plays alongside Bassey for both Fulham and Nigeria, believes the centre-back’s personality on the pitch naturally lends itself to leadership.

“He’s very vocal,” Iwobi said, according to AllNigeriaSoccer.

The midfielder’s assessment reflects one of the key demands of Bassey’s position, with centre-backs required to organise the defensive line, communicate with teammates and constantly assess the positioning of players around them.

Bassey himself has previously explained that leadership comes naturally to him because of his position at the heart of the defence.

“Leading comes naturally because of the position I play, being able to see everything and having to communicate as a centre-half,” the defender said in an interview with Fulham. 

The 26-year-old has also insisted that becoming captain has not fundamentally changed his approach or personality.

“It’s a privilege. Being able to captain this club is unbelievable,” Bassey said. 

“Going into my fourth season, I know the boys and get on with everyone, so I’ll just be myself and try to help everyone.”

Bassey has been an established member of the Fulham squad since joining the London club from Ajax in 2023.

His development at Craven Cottage has seen him become an important defensive figure, with the Nigeria international winning Fulham’s Player of the Season award for the 2024/25 campaign. 

The defender’s leadership role has added another dimension to his responsibilities, particularly as Fulham navigate the early stages of the Premier League campaign.

Bassey has said he prefers to maintain a calm personality rather than constantly shouting at teammates, believing players should sometimes be allowed to process disappointing results before discussing what went wrong.

“I know everyone goes out there and gives 100 per cent, and sometimes we’re just not able to win,” he said.

“I know they’re frustrated, I’m frustrated, but I think sometimes it’s best just to leave people be and then speak about it later.” 

Iwobi’s comments provide another indication of the respect Bassey commands among his teammates as he continues to grow into his leadership responsibilities at Fulham.

The defender has also remained an important part of the Super Eagles setup, where his experience at Premier League level has made him one of Nigeria’s established defensive options.
