Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have been handed a potentially demanding Group B assignment at the 2026 WAFU B U-17 Championship, with the five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions drawn alongside Côte d’Ivoire and Niger Republic.

The regional tournament is scheduled to take place in Burkina Faso, where Nigeria will begin its campaign with qualification for the 2027 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations among the major objectives.

The draw leaves the Golden Eaglets in a three-team Group B, meaning every fixture will carry significant importance as the young Nigerians seek to secure a place in the knockout stage.

Côte d’Ivoire and Niger will provide Nigeria with the opposition in the group, while hosts Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo and Benin Republic have been drawn together in Group A.  

The top two teams from Group B are expected to progress to the semi-finals, giving the Golden Eaglets little room for error in their bid to advance.

The competition carries added significance for Nigeria because the WAFU B U-17 Championship serves as the regional qualification route for the 2027 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.  

For the Golden Eaglets, qualification for the continental tournament is a major target following Nigeria’s recent struggles to maintain its traditional presence at the U-17 AFCON.

The Nigerian team has already commenced preparations in Abuja under head coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere, who is overseeing a rebuilding process aimed at assembling a squad capable of returning Nigeria to continental prominence.

The Golden Eaglets recently stepped up their preparations with friendly matches in Abuja, including a 4-0 victory over Simonben Academy and a goalless draw against Galadima FC.  

Uwejamomere and his technical crew will now have a clearer picture of the challenge ahead as they fine-tune the squad before the tournament.

Nigeria’s status as a five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champion means expectations will be high, but the immediate priority will be navigating a competitive Group B and securing a semi-final berth.

The Golden Eaglets will need to finish among the leading two teams in the group before turning their attention to the knockout phase and the battle for qualification for the 2027 U-17 AFCON.

Meanwhile, Burkina Faso will have home advantage in Group A, where the hosts will face Ghana, Benin Republic and Togo.  

With the tournament scheduled for October, attention will now shift to the final phase of Nigeria’s preparations as Uwejamomere works to build a balanced squad capable of handling the pressure of regional competition.
