Ese Brume hits season's best to clinch long jump gold at San Diego Open

Nigeria’s long jump sensation Ese Brume continued her steady return to top form after producing a season’s best leap of 6.59 metres to win the women’s long jump event at the 2026 USATF San Diego/Imperial Open and Masters Championships in Chula Vista, California.

Brume, the reigning Commonwealth champion and African record holder, recorded the winning mark with a legal wind reading of +1.6m/s, improving on the wind-aided 6.53m she posted at the LA Grand Prix earlier this month in her opening outdoor competition of the season.

The Nigerian star finished ahead of American Nicole Warwick to secure the gold medal, underlining her growing momentum as she prepares for the major international competitions later in the year.

A two time World Championships medallist and Olympic finalist, Brume remains one of the world's premier long jumpers. She still holds the African record of 7.17 metres and her latest victory in San Diego is another encouraging sign that she is regaining peak form ahead of a busy 2026 athletics campaign.

The Chula Vista meet provided valuable competitive exposure for athletes gearing up for the summer track and field season, with Brume making the most of the opportunity by delivering her best performance of the year so far.
