Abiodun Obafemi raises concerns over club commitments ahead of U-23 Eagles' DRC Qualifiers
Former Nigeria international and member of the Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning football team, Abiodun Obafemi, has expressed concerns that club commitments could prevent some home-based players invited to the U-23 national team from honouring their invitations for the upcoming qualifiers against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Obafemi believes the timing of the fixtures could make it difficult for the coaching crew to secure full compliance from the invited players, given the demands of their respective clubs.
Speaking on the situation, the former defender noted that although the opportunity presents a platform for the players to showcase their abilities, their participation will largely depend on whether their clubs are willing to release them.
"Honestly, this time of the season is going to be very difficult for him to get 100% compliance.
"Majority of the players may not honour the invitation because of club commitments. The quality I saw there, it is an opportunity for them to be seen. These are boys looking for this opportunity. The question is whether the teams will release them," he said.
