Exclusive: Rasheedat Ajibade’s injury situation takes new turn after hospital scan

Nigeria captain Rasheedat Ajibade could be sidelined for at least two months following the injury she sustained during Nigeria’s 5-0 victory over Comoros in the second leg of their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying tie, SavidNews can exclusively report.

Preliminary medical findings following an X-ray examination at a Lagos hospital have raised concerns about the possible length of Ajibade’s recovery, although further medical assessments are expected to establish the full extent of the injury.

SavidNews gathered that the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder underwent the X-ray at the request of doctors from her French club, who also monitored the match and are seeking more information about the injury she suffered while representing Nigeria.

The 26-year-old, however travelled back to Paris at about 11pm on Tuesday immediately after the examination and is expected to undergo further medical checks to determine the nature and severity of the injury.

While the preliminary assessment suggests that Ajibade could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, the reported two-month timeline remains subject to confirmation following the additional examinations.

The injury occurred during Tuesday’s encounter at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, where the Super Falcons completed a 7-0 aggregate victory over Comoros to advance to the third round of the African qualifying series for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Ajibade was visibly distressed after a first-half collision with a Comoros defender and was eventually stretchered off the pitch, forcing Nigeria to make an early substitution in 28th minute with Folashade Ijamilusi replacing the captain.

Speaking after the match, Super Falcons caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen said the medical team had taken Ajibade to the hospital for an MRI scan to determine the severity of the injury.

“I was with the medical team and they said they are taking her to the hospital for an MRI to ascertain the degree of the injury,” Eguavoen said after the match.

He added that the medical team would provide an update through the team’s head of media once the necessary information became available.

Eguavoen also expressed hope that the injury would not be serious, describing Ajibade’s early departure from the match as an unfortunate setback despite Nigeria’s convincing result.

The possibility of an extended absence represents a significant concern for Paris Saint-Germain, particularly as the Nigerian international had only recently returned from an injury layoff.

Ajibade’s potential unavailability could rule her out of several important fixtures for the French club, including their league encounter against defending champions Lyon on October 17 and the UEFA Women’s Champions League meeting with Manchester City.

Her absence would deprive PSG of an experienced attacking player whose versatility and international experience have made her an important part of the squad.

For Nigeria, the injury also raises concerns ahead of the Super Falcons’ next assignment against Morocco in the third round of the 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign.

However, the priority for both the national team and PSG will be to establish an accurate diagnosis before determining the midfielder’s recovery programme and likely return date.

Until the additional medical examinations are completed and an official update is issued, Ajibade’s exact recovery period remains uncertain.

SavidNews will continue to monitor developments surrounding the Super Falcons captain’s condition.
