Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury set for one-off clash with no rematch clause
Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will have no contractual provision for a rematch when the two British heavyweight stars finally settle their long-running rivalry on December 11.
The former world champions are scheduled to meet in a blockbuster all-British showdown at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, with the highly anticipated fight potentially serving as the final chapter of their illustrious careers.
Despite years of rivalry and speculation over a second meeting, the December 11 bout has been structured as a one-off contest. With both fighters approaching the twilight of their careers, defeat could potentially force either man to consider retirement.
According to Sky Sports, Fury’s manager, Spencer Brown, confirmed there is no rematch clause but insisted that another fight could still happen depending on how the first encounter unfolds.
“Contractually, there’s one fight. There’s one big fight. It was designed for that,” Brown said.
“I’m not saying there can’t be a second fight. But, if Tyson wins, we’d like to resume things with Oleksandr Usyk as well.”
Brown believes the consequences could be particularly significant for the loser, given where both fighters are in their careers.
“They’re all close to the end of their careers,” he said.
“Whoever loses here, where do they go? That’s a tough one. Where do they go afterwards?
“Whoever wins, the journey continues. Whoever loses, they’ve got to think about what they’re going to do and when they’re going to do it.”
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, also confirmed that the contract contains no rematch clause, although he acknowledged that the size of the event could make a second meeting difficult to rule out.
“No rematch clause. It’s one fight, one-off. Listen, if it’s a blockbuster, I’m sure they’ll do it again,” Hearn told Sky Sports News.
“But for our mindset, it’s one and done.
“Go in there, end this guy and on we go.”
Hearn expects the determination of both heavyweights to win could make for a brutal and unpredictable encounter, regardless of how the fight develops.
“Both guys could be down in this fight but they’re so desperate to win you can guarantee they’ll be climbing and crawling off that canvas to win the fight.”
