Anthony Joshua suffers minor injuries in fatal car crash in Nigeria
Nigerian-British boxing star and former two-time heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua has sustained minor injuries following a car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two other passengers, local police have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Monday at around 11:00 a.m. local time along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, Ogun State, close to Joshua’s ancestral hometown. Joshua was travelling in the back seat of a Lexus SUV** when the vehicle was involved in a collision.
In a statement, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident and Joshua’s condition.
“The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated,” the statement read.
“He was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention. Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene.”
Further details were provided by Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo, who told ESPN that the crash was caused by a tyre burst.
“The accident happened as a result of a burst tyre on AJ’s vehicle, which caused the driver to lose control and swerve into a stationary truck parked along the road,” Ogunlowo said.
“For now, I’m aware of two fatalities, and Joshua has been taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.”
It has not yet been confirmed which vehicle the deceased passengers were travelling in.
Joshua was in Africa shortly after recording a sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami nine days earlier, a win that marked his 29th victory in 33 professional fights and reignited speculation of a potential mega-fight with British rival Tyson Fury in 2026.
A representative for Joshua told ESPN:
“Early indications are he is OK, but we are waiting on further official news.”
Images circulating on social media show Joshua being assisted out of the heavily damaged vehicle, visibly in pain.
Meanwhile, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn told Daily Mail Sport that he was still awaiting direct confirmation from the boxer.
“We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don’t want to speculate on how he is, but thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images,” Hearn said.
“We are awaiting more information and will update in due course.”
The Ogun State Police Command has stated that further updates will be provided as investigations into the crash continue.
