Arokodare battles nine others for Ajax August goal of the month
Nigeria international Tolu Arokodare has been shortlisted for Ajax Amsterdam’s August Goal of the Month award following his impressive start to life at the Dutch giants.
The Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee is among 10 players competing for the monthly prize, with his effort during Ajax’s opening fixtures of the 2026/27 campaign earning recognition from the Amsterdam club.
Arokodare joined Ajax on a season-long loan from Wolves in July, with the Dutch club holding an option to make the transfer permanent.
The 25-year-old striker quickly made his presence felt in Amsterdam, scoring his first Ajax goal in the club’s 3-0 victory over Telstar.
Arokodare struck in the 60th minute to complete Ajax’s scoring after coming into the match, adding another positive moment to his early spell at the club.
His nomination for the August award further underlines the impact he has made since arriving from Wolves, following a difficult spell in the Premier League.
The Nigerian forward previously established himself as a prolific striker in Belgium, particularly during his time with Genk, before earning a move to Wolves.
He has also featured for the Super Eagles and remains part of Nigeria’s growing pool of attacking options.
Arokodare’s competition for the Ajax award comes as the club undergoes a major rebuild under new head coach Míchel Sánchez and sporting director Jordi Cruyff, with the Nigerian among several attacking reinforcements brought in during the summer.
The striker’s physical presence and ability to operate as a traditional No. 9 were identified as qualities Ajax wanted to add to their revamped attack.
With the new season still in its early stages, Arokodare will hope his performances continue to strengthen his position in the Ajax squad while also enhancing his prospects of further involvement with the Super Eagles.
The August Goal of the Month nomination represents another early milestone for the Nigerian, who will be looking to establish himself at one of Europe’s most historically successful clubs.
The eventual winner will be determined from the 10 nominated goals, giving Arokodare an opportunity to add individual recognition to his promising start in Amsterdam.
