Arthur Okonkwo joins Charlton Athletic on season-long loan
Charlton Athletic have completed the signing of Nigerian goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo on a season-long loan deal from Wrexham.
The 6ft 6in shot-stopper becomes the Addicks’ eighth signing of the summer as the club continues to strengthen its squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Born in Camden, Okonkwo began his professional career at Arsenal, progressing through the club’s academy before signing his first senior contract with the Gunners in 2021.
The 24-year-old later gained valuable first-team experience during loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian club Sturm Graz, where he helped the side lift the Austrian Cup.
Okonkwo subsequently joined Wrexham, initially on loan, before making his move permanent in June 2024 following his important contribution to the club’s promotion to League One.
He continued to impress with the Welsh outfit, helping Wrexham achieve back-to-back promotions with a second-place finish in the 2024/25 season before they narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs last term.
At international level, Okonkwo has made two appearances for Super Eagles. He earned his debut during their Unity Cup triumph at The Valley earlier this summer.
The goalkeeper will now spend the 2026/27 season with Charlton, where he will look to gain further experience and strengthen his position among Nigeria’s leading goalkeeping options.
