Atlanta Dream signs Amy Okonkwo on developmental deal

WNBA side Atlanta Dream have signed Nigeria captain Amy Okonkwo to a developmental contract ahead of the 2026 season.

The club confirmed the signing on Wednesday, bringing the Nigerian forward into their setup after her recent training camp stint with the Dallas Wings.

Okonkwo impressed during her time with Dallas in the 2025 WNBA season, featuring in eight games and averaging 11.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game while shooting over 60 per cent from the field.

One of her standout performances came against Phoenix on September 11, 2025, when she exploded from the bench for a season-high 20 points. She also recorded 14 points against the Connecticut Sun and followed it up with 11 points and a career-best six rebounds against her new side, Atlanta Dream.

Her strong start to life in the league saw her make history as the first undrafted player since 2000 to average at least 10 points while shooting 60 per cent or better across her first two WNBA appearances.

Beyond the WNBA, Okonkwo has remained a key figure for Nigeria’s women’s national team, D’Tigress. The forward played a major role in the country’s consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket triumphs in 2023 and 2025, earning Most Valuable Player honours at both tournaments.

Atlanta Dream will return to action on Sunday, May 17, when they host the Las Vegas Aces in their next WNBA fixture.
