Bayelsa Queens edge Ghana Police Ladies in WAFU-B opener

Bayelsa Queens kicked off their WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifying campaign on a bright note, defeating Ghana’s Police Ladies 2-1 on Sunday at the Stade Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro.

Shakirat Moshood and Emem Essien found the net for the reigning Nigerian champions, who showed early intent and composure in front of goal.

Moshood opened the scoring in the 12th minute, calmly slotting home after controlling a headed pass from Janet Akekoromowei. Bayelsa nearly doubled their lead 24 minutes later, but a goal-line clearance denied them. Akekoromowei herself spurned a couple of chances as the Ghanaians piled forward in search of an equaliser before the break.

Bayelsa Queens eventually extended their advantage in the 62nd minute through substitute Emem Essien. Last season’s WAFU B top scorer with Edo Queens, Essien made an immediate impact after replacing Sofiat Bankole, finishing off Moshood’s cross with trademark precision.

Police Ladies pulled one back just six minutes later, as Mary Berko punished a defensive lapse to set up a tense finale. Both sides squandered chances in the closing stages, but Bayelsa held firm to secure all three points.

Moshood, who scored once, provided an assist, and dictated play throughout, was named Player of the Match.

The win puts Bayelsa Queens in a strong position as they continue their group campaign against Togo’s Association Sportive de la Kozah Football Club on Wednesday, before wrapping up against Sam Nelly FC of Benin Republic on Saturday.
