Beyond Limit edge Gateway United to keep NPFL promotion dream alive

Beyond Limits Football Academy boosted their Nigeria Premier Football League promotion hopes with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over local rivals Gateway FC in an Ogun State derby clash at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Saturday.

The Nigeria National League encounter delivered on its billing as both teams produced a fiercely contested battle, but it was the visitors who emerged with all three points to maintain pressure in the race for promotion from Conference A.

Beyond Limits started the brighter of the two sides and made their early dominance count in the 13th minute when Celestine Peter rose highest to head the ball past the advancing goalkeeper, handing the academy side a deserved lead.

Gateway responded with increased urgency and came close to restoring parity shortly after. However, veteran goalkeeper Daniel Aiyenugba was equal to the task in the 27th minute, producing a sharp save to keep out a powerful header from a corner kick.

The hosts continued to push forward and eventually found their reward late in the first half. Central defender Abiodun Ayeni reacted quickest to a loose ball following another corner to fire home the equaliser in the 38th minute, ensuring the sides went into the break level at 1–1.

Beyond Limits regained control after the restart and restored their advantage ten minutes into the second half. A well-crafted move involving Mark Akpabio and Yusuf Saka opened up space inside the box, allowing Akpabio to calmly slice his finish into the top corner in the 55th minute.

Gateway pressed for another equaliser in the closing stages, but Beyond Limits stood firm through five minutes of stoppage time to secure a valuable victory.

The result keeps the 2024 NNL champions firmly in the hunt for promotion, despite uncertainty surrounding their eligibility for the top flight due to the presence of their parent club, Remo Stars, in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

However, with Remo Stars currently battling relegation, Beyond Limits could still become eligible for promotion should the situation change by the end of the season.

The academy side remain locked in a tight race with Inter Lagos for top spot in Conference A. The Lagos outfit maintained their lead with 24 points following a commanding 5–0 win over Abia Comets at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, keeping them one point ahead of Beyond Limits.

Beyond Limits will aim to continue their strong run when they host Edel FC in Ikenne in their next fixture, while Inter Lagos will be on a bye.

For Gateway FC, the defeat compounds an already difficult campaign, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the conference and staring at the possibility of a second consecutive relegation to the third-tier Nigeria Nationwide League One.

Their next challenge comes in an away fixture against fellow strugglers Abia Comets in Aba.
