CAF mandates female presence on technical benches in bold women's football reform

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled a groundbreaking coaching regulation designed to boost female representation and technical development in women’s football across the continent, Savidnews reports.

In a directive issued to its member associations, CAF announced that every women’s team and female competition under its authority must include at least one qualified female coach on the technical bench.

Under the new rule, the female coach can serve either as the Head Coach or Assistant Coach, provided she meets the required coaching qualifications and licensing standards for the role.

CAF stressed that the appointed female coach must possess the same certification, competence, and professional credentials demanded under its existing coaching regulations, ensuring that merit and professionalism remain paramount.

The initiative forms part of CAF’s wider commitment to advancing gender inclusion, strengthening technical expertise, and expanding career opportunities for women within African football.

Member associations and clubs participating in CAF women’s competitions have been urged to align with the directive ahead of forthcoming tournaments, as the continental body intensifies efforts to professionalize and elevate the women’s game.
