Champions League: Ademola Lookman left to lament as Atletico, Arsenal settle for tense semifinal stalemate

Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman was at the heart of Atletico Madrid’s attacking push, but missed opportunities proved costly as the Spanish side were held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal in a gripping Champions League semi-final first leg.

While Julian Alvarez ultimately rescued Atletico with a second-half penalty, much of the hosts’ attacking spark flowed through Lookman, who came closest to tipping the balance in their favour.

The Nigerian forward forced a smart save from David Raya early in the second half and later threatened again, but couldn’t find the decisive finish his performance deserved.

Arsenal had earlier edged ahead through Viktor Gyokeres, who calmly converted from the spot just before the break after a foul by David Hancko.

However, Atletico responded with renewed intensity after halftime, with Lookman leading the charge as they pinned the visitors back.

The equaliser arrived when Ben White handled Marcos Llorente’s effort in the box, allowing Alvarez to step up and make amends for his recent Copa del Rey disappointment with a thunderous penalty to level proceedings.

Atletico continued to press for a winner, with Antoine Griezmann striking the crossbar and Lookman again going close, but Arsenal’s disciplined defending ensured they left Madrid with the tie finely balanced.

The closing stages brought further drama when Arsenal thought they had earned another penalty after Eberechi Eze went down under a challenge, only for VAR to overturn the decision.

In a match defined more by tension than flair, Lookman’s lively display stood out even if his missed chances may yet loom large ahead of the decisive second leg in London.
