FIFA cracks down on players protests ahead of World Cup of

Global football governing body FIFA has unveiled a strict new rule that will see players immediately sent off if they walk off the pitch in protest against refereeing decisions during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision comes in direct response to the controversial scenes that overshadowed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Final, where player protests disrupted the match and sparked widespread criticism over discipline and respect for officials.

Under the new directive, any player who abandons the field in defiance of a referee’s call will be shown a red card without hesitation.

FIFA also made it clear that coaches or teammates who encourage such actions will face disciplinary consequences.

According to FIFA, the regulation is part of a broader effort to restore authority on the pitch and ensure that high stakes matches are not derailed by dissent.

Officials stressed that respect for referees remains central to maintaining order and fairness in the game.

The rule will officially take effect at the 2026 World Cup, with national teams expected to educate players and technical staff on the updated disciplinary framework well ahead of the tournament.

The move signals FIFA’s firm stance emotional reactions may be part of football, but organized protests that undermine match control will no longer be tolerated on the sport’s biggest stage.
