London heroics strengthen Arthur Okonkwo's Super Eagles case

Nigeria eligible goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo delivered a statement performance in London as his late heroics powered Wrexham A.F.C. to a gritty 1–0 away victory over Charlton Athletic F.C. in a Championship clash at The Valley.

The 24 year old’s decisive 90th minute save ensured his side walked away with maximum points and further strengthened his growing case for international recognition.

While Ollie Rathbone’s 30th minute strike proved the difference on the scoresheet, it was Okonkwo who ultimately stole the spotlight.

With the match hanging in the balance, a loose clearance fell kindly to Sonny Carey on the edge of the box, but the former Arsenal F.C. academy graduate reacted sharply to deny what looked like a certain equaliser, sealing his 10th clean sheet of the season.

Nine of those shutouts have come in the Championship, underlining his consistency in a demanding campaign. He also remained unbeaten as Wrexham saw off Ipswich Town F.C. to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup, further highlighting his importance to the promotion-chasing Welsh side.

Back home, his assured displays have not gone unnoticed. With the March international window approaching, speculation is mounting that Okonkwo could finally receive a maiden invitation to the Super Eagles.

Having committed his future to Nigeria and previously endorsed by former NFF president Amaju Pinnick though overlooked at the time by ex-coach Gernot Rohr the in form shot stopper now appears poised to translate club excellence into international opportunity.
