Champions League: Igoh Ogbu headlines Nigerian stas in UCL action
Nigerian footballers Igoh Ogbu and Christian Nwachukwu will headline the country’s representatives in Thursday’s UEFA Champions League action as the new league-phase campaign continues across Europe.
The pair face high-profile assignments, with Ogbu set to feature for Slavia Prague against French club Lens, while Nwachukwu is expected to be involved when Azerbaijani side Sabah take on Manchester United at Old Trafford. 
Also attracting attention is Nigerian winger Prosper Obah, who will be hoping to make an impact for Shakhtar Donetsk against Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.
Ogbu faces Lens test with Slavia Prague
Ogbu is expected to anchor Slavia Prague’s defence when the Czech champions welcome Lens to the Fortuna Arena.
The Nigerian centre-back has established himself as a key defensive figure since joining Slavia in January 2023, with his physical strength, tackling and aerial ability among his major attributes.
Those qualities could be crucial against a Lens side that finished second in Ligue 1 last season and also lifted the Coupe de France.
Slavia will enter the encounter with confidence after making an unbeaten start to their domestic campaign, collecting 17 points from their opening seven league matches. 
The Czech side, however, will be eager to improve its fortunes in Europe after enduring a 19-match winless run in the Champions League.
Ogbu will therefore be central to Slavia’s attempt to combine defensive solidity with a positive start to the league phase.
Nwachukwu gets Old Trafford opportunity
For Nwachukwu, Thursday’s fixture represents one of the biggest nights of his young career.
The 20-year-old winger will travel with Sabah to Manchester for a meeting with United, having already played an important role in the Azerbaijani club’s historic qualification for the Champions League league phase.
Nwachukwu scored in Sabah’s play-off victory over Hapoel Be’er Sheva, helping the club secure its first-ever appearance in the competition’s league phase. 
His pace, direct running and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations have made him one of Sabah’s attacking threats.
The Nigerian will now have the opportunity to test those qualities against Manchester United on one of European football’s most famous stages.
Sabah also arrive in strong form, having defeated Zira 5-0 domestically. The club has won six of its eight Champions League matches this season and recorded four clean sheets. 
Obah targets PSV upset
Meanwhile, Obah will be hoping for a memorable Champions League appearance when Shakhtar Donetsk face PSV Eindhoven at the Philips Stadium.
The Nigerian wide player can operate on either flank and is noted for his pace, quick feet and creativity in one-on-one situations.
Shakhtar, however, face a formidable PSV team that has dominated Dutch football, winning the Eredivisie title in each of the past three seasons. 
More Nigerians in UCL action
Slavia Prague’s Nigerian contingent extends beyond Ogbu, with Samuel Isife, Mubarak Suleiman and David Moses also expected to be involved.
Their presence further highlights the growing Nigerian influence within the Czech champions’ squad.
Across Europe, several other Nigerians are also part of the wider Champions League picture this season, underlining the country’s growing representation at the continent’s elite club competition. 
For Ogbu, Nwachukwu and Obah, however, Thursday presents a particularly significant opportunity.
While Ogbu will be tasked with helping Slavia contain Lens, Nwachukwu faces the challenge of making his mark at Old Trafford, while Obah will look to provide Shakhtar with an attacking spark against PSV.
The spotlight will consequently be firmly on the Nigerian trio as the Champions League league phase gathers momentum.
