D'Tigress receive Tinubu's final Afrobasket reward, hail Presidential support
Players and officials of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have received the outstanding financial rewards promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket in Côte d’Ivoire.
The payment completes the Presidential Rewards package announced for the team after they retained the continental crown last year. The development has drawn appreciation from members of the squad, who described the fulfilment of the pledge as a strong demonstration of the government’s commitment to Nigerian athletes.
The latest payment followed efforts by the National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Prof. Taiwo Oyedele, to conclude arrangements for the release of the outstanding funds.
Within three days of the process being concluded, the promised financial rewards were paid into the accounts of D’Tigress and the Super Falcons.
D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo led the team in expressing appreciation to President Tinubu, describing his actions as an unprecedented show of support for Nigerian athletes.
She noted that the team had now received the various rewards promised after their historic continental success, including houses, national honours and the financial component.
“We are more than grateful to Mr. President, the First Lady, and the leadership of the National Sports Commission, led by the Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade,”
Okonkwo said, while also acknowledging the Nigeria Basketball Federation and its President, Engr. Musa Kida.
D’Tigress cemented their dominance of African women’s basketball at the 2025 Afrobasket in Abidjan, defeating Mali 78-64 in the final to claim a record extending seventh continental title.
The victory made Nigeria the first team to win five consecutive Women’s Afrobasket championships and extended the country’s unbeaten run in the competition to 29 games.
