FIBA sets dates for 2027 Women's Afrobasket as host nation remains unconfirmed

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has confirmed the dates for the 2027 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, with the continental championship scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 1, 2027.

The 10-day tournament will bring together Africa’s leading women’s national basketball teams in the continent’s premier women’s basketball championship.

The confirmation of the dates provides participating federations with an important planning window as preparations begin for the next edition of the competition.

The tournament is expected to feature the continent’s leading basketball nations, with teams battling for the Women’s AfroBasket title and continental supremacy.

The 2027 edition will also provide another major platform for the continued development and promotion of women’s basketball across Africa.

Host Nation Yet to Be Confirmed

Despite confirming the dates, FIBA is yet to announce the host country for the 2027 Women’s AfroBasket.

The governing body had previously invited interested member federations, including Nigeria, to submit bids to host the tournament, with the eventual host expected to be determined following FIBA’s evaluation process.

Further details regarding the host venue, participating teams and other tournament arrangements are expected to be communicated by FIBA in due course.

For now, the July 23-August 1 window represents the first major confirmed detail for the 2027 continental championship.

D’Tigress Target Another Strong Campaign

Nigeria’s D’Tigress will be among the teams expected to feature prominently in the next edition after their recent dominance of African women’s basketball.

The confirmation of the tournament dates will allow the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) and the national team technical crew to begin planning towards another competitive campaign.

Nigeria has established itself as one of the leading forces in African women’s basketball, making preparations for the 2027 championship particularly significant.

With the host nation still to be announced, attention will now turn to FIBA’s next decision and the eventual confirmation of the participating teams and competition format.

The 2027 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket will ultimately provide another opportunity for Africa’s best women basketball players to compete for continental honours when the tournament tips off on July 23, 2027.

The championship is scheduled to conclude on August 1, 2027, when the new African champions will be crowned.
