NPFL: Inter Lagos hit with heavy sanctions over match officials' assault
Inter Lagos have been sanctioned for multiple breaches of the Nigeria Pewmier Football League (NPFL) Framework & Rules during their Matchday 7 fixture against Katsina United on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
The Lagos-based club were found to have failed to provide adequate and effective security for the fixture, allowing unauthorized persons to gain access to restricted areas and attack match officials as they made their way from the dressing room to their vehicle after the game.
Inter Lagos were also sanctioned for failing to ensure the proper conduct of their officials and supporters, resulting in the match officials being held hostage for more than an hour following the match.
According to the sanctions, club officials and some supporters also intimidated, harassed and verbally abused the match officials, engaging in conduct deemed capable of bringing the game into disrepute.
The club’s team manager, alongside some supporters, further assaulted the officials. The first assistant referee reportedly sustained a facial injury and lost personal belongings, including suffering damage to his mobile phone.
As a result, Inter Lagos have been fined N2 million for failing to provide adequate and effective security, while an additional N1 million fine was imposed for holding the match officials hostage for more than an hour.
The club were also fined N2 million for the assault on the match officials and a further N250,000 as compensation to the affected assistant referee for the loss of personal items, damage to his mobile phone and medical treatment for the injury sustained during the incident.
In addition to the financial penalties, three points and three goals will be deducted from Inter Lagos’ accrued points and goals for assaulting and causing injury to the first assistant referee.
Inter Lagos have 48 hours from the date of notice to appeal the sanctions.
