Renowned human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has strongly condemned the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling it an illegal move that threatens democratic values and fosters a culture of intimidation in the Nigerian Senate.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Adeyanju criticized the Senate’s six-month suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan, arguing that it not only violates her fundamental rights but also deprives the people of Kogi Central of proper representation. He urged the senator to challenge the decision in court, warning that such actions set a dangerous precedent.

"Even if the Senate considers Senator Natasha's allegations frivolous, it has a duty to investigate them transparently. Sweeping serious claims under the rug only raises doubts about the integrity of the legislative process," Adeyanju stated.

He further questioned the impartiality of the Senate Ethics Committee, pointing out that its chairman had openly defended Senate President Godswill Akpabio—who is at the center of the controversy.
"This is a blatant conflict of interest. Akpabio cannot be both a judge and a party in his own case. For justice to prevail, he must step aside to allow an unbiased investigation," he added.

Adeyanju also criticized the lack of due process in the suspension, highlighting that neither Akpoti-Uduaghan nor Akpabio was given an opportunity to testify before the committee.

"This mirrors the troubling trend in our electoral system, where results are declared in the dead of night without scrutiny. It sends a dangerous message to young Nigerians—that accountability and fairness can be compromised," he warned.

Encouraging Akpoti-Uduaghan to resist political intimidation, Adeyanju emphasized that the Senate lacks the authority to silence an elected representative.

"Women who challenge the status quo face immense resistance in politics. Natasha must stand firm and refuse to be silenced," he declared.

Adeyanju’s statement adds to the growing outcry against the senator’s suspension, as critics warn that the decision could erode public trust in Nigeria’s democracy.
