FCT submits proposal to host 2028 National Sports Festival

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has formally put forth a proposal to host the 2028 National Sports Festival, which would mark the third occasion that the capital has organized this esteemed multi-sport event, having previously done so in 2004 and 2018.

Exclusivenews.com.ng can confirm that this proposal follows significant advancements in the FCT's sports infrastructure, including the recent awarding of contracts for extensive renovations of existing sports facilities and the establishment of a new sports center in the city.

Sources indicate that the Minister of the FCT has instructed that essential venues, such as the Area 10 Old Parade Ground and the Area 3 Football Field, receive thorough renovations to align with international standards.

Nevertheless, there remains ambiguity regarding the future of the six mini-stadiums situated in the FCT’s Area Councils. These facilities, constructed by previous administrations, have been largely neglected and were not explicitly included in the recent renovation initiatives. Consequently, this oversight has resulted in a predominant focus on the Area 3 pitch, which continues to be the most utilized venue.

The 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival is set to take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in May 2025. Initially launched in 1973 in Lagos, the festival is Nigeria's largest sporting event, often likened to the Olympic Games. It aims to promote national unity and serves as a vital platform for identifying and developing sports talent throughout the nation.
