Flamingo set for Guinea test as World Cup qualification journey begins

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, are set to reignite their pursuit of global glory as they face Guinea in the second round of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Ranked as Africa’s top side at this stage, the Flamingos will open their campaign with the first leg scheduled between May 22–24, before concluding the tie in the return leg from May 29–31.

Their opponents, Guinea, arrive with momentum and attacking intent, having swept aside Niger Republic with an emphatic 8–2 aggregate victory. A dominant 5–2 away win in the first leg laid the foundation, before they sealed progression with a composed 3–0 triumph at home.

For Nigeria, the stakes are clear. Victory over the two legs will secure a place in the final qualifying round slated for July 3–5 and July 10–12 where Africa’s representatives for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, scheduled for October 17 to November 7, will be decided.

The Flamingos carry both pedigree and expectation into the contest. Bronze medallists at the 2022 tournament, they have featured in eight of the nine editions since making their debut in 2008, missing only the 2018 finals.

Now under the guidance of new head coach Akeem Busari, the team has begun fine-tuning preparations in Abuja. Invited players are already in camp, sharpening their edge for what promises to be a decisive and demanding encounter against a confident Guinean side.
