Flamingos receive $50,000 cash reward at special reception in Morocco
Nigeria’s world champion U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, received a special reception in Rabat, Morocco, on Saturday night following their historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The team was hosted by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Commission’s Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, in recognition of their achievement.
The reception was also attended by the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and an NSC sponsor, Alhaji Saleh Ahmadu, who rewarded the players with a cash gift of $50,000.
The gathering provided an opportunity to celebrate the young Nigerian players for making history by defeating Japan 2-1 in the final to become the first African team to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The cash reward served as additional recognition of the players’ commitment, hard work and determination throughout the tournament in Morocco.
There was also positive news regarding the outstanding bonuses owed to the team, as the Presidency, through the National Sports Commission, facilitated the payment of their bonuses covering the campaign from the preliminary qualifying rounds to the final.
The Flamingos capped their remarkable journey with a 2-1 victory over Japan, the 2014 champions, to secure Nigeria’s first-ever title in the competition.
