HFN President commends Abia State Sports Council for hosting national Handball Championship
Samuel Ocheho, President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), has praised the Abia State Sports Council. He acknowledged their crucial role in hosting the National Under-12 and Under-15 Handball Championship in Umuahia.
The championship took place from 18 to 28 March 2025. It successfully showcased young handball players from across Nigeria.
Mr. Ocheho thanked the Abia State Government and the Commissioner for Sports. He also recognised the Abia State Sports Council for their dedication to developing grassroots handball.
"We are very thankful to the Abia State Sports Council for their support," Ocheho said. "Their collaboration ensured a well-organised tournament. It provided a platform for young athletes to improve their skills."
Teams from different states participated in the championship. Young talents displayed great performances in a competitive environment.
In the Under 12 girls’ final, Benue beat Sokoto 20-19 after extra time. Both teams scored goal for goal in normal time. The game went to extra time. Benue secured the title in a dramatic final. Sokoto’s U-12 boys’ team won against C & S, 28-25.
Kaduna defeated Adamawa 30-28 for third place in the U-15 boys' category. Both teams showed attacking talent. Kaduna's better execution in the final moments secured the bronze medal.
Abia State dominated the U-15 boys' final. They defeated Niger 37-28 to win the championship. Their girls' team also defeated Adamawa 32-15, completing a double victory.
Ocheho restated HFN’s commitment to grassroots handball development. He promised ongoing support for young players to reach their full potential.
He thanked all teams, coaches, officials, and sponsors. Their contributions made the championship successful. He stressed that the future of Nigerian handball is bright.
The Handball Federation of Nigeria is dedicated to growing the sport. They anticipate future collaborations with state governments and stakeholders. They aim to advance handball at all levels.
