Former Nigerian forward Osaze Odemwingie has revealed how an administrative blunder left thw country's U-23 men's team scrambling for kits during their memorable campaign at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

 Speaking during a conversation with Nigeria's senior women's national team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Odemwingie recalled how Samson Siasia’s side defied expectations to progress deep into the tournament after officials had seemingly anticipated an early exit.

 According to the former West Bromwich Albion star, federation officials had already arranged for the team’s luggage and equipment to be sent back to Nigeria, apparently believing the players would not advance beyond the group stage.

 However, Nigeria progressed to the knockout rounds, leaving the squad with limited matchday kits.

 The situation became even more unusual when the players reportedly turned to the women’s team for assistance.

 “At the Beijing Olympics with Siasia, we had to wear the girls’ kits for the second round and the rest,” Odemwingie recalled.

 “Apparently, they thought we were not going to get far. They sent all the kits back home to give away or whatever. The Falcons, I think they didn’t make it through the next stage, they now left their kits.”

 The unusual situation did not escape the attention of their opponents. Odemwingie said members of the United States team teased the Nigerians for repeatedly wearing the same outfits.

 “Then we made it out of the group and the American team is saying, ‘You guys are wearing the same clothes all the time’. They laughed at us,” he said.

 With few alternatives available, some members of the squad reportedly resorted to purchasing plain white T-shirts to supplement their limited wardrobe.

 “Some of us went to buy plain white T-shirts,” Odemwingie added.

 Despite the logistical difficulties, Nigeria continued their impressive run and reached the Olympic final.

 The team ultimately claimed the silver medal after losing 1-0 to Argentina, with Ángel Di María scoring the decisive goal.

 Nigeria’s Beijing 2008 campaign remains one of the country’s notable Olympic football achievements, but Odemwingie’s recollection offers a humorous behind-the-scenes account of how the players dealt with an unexpected kit shortage while competing at the highest level.
