If Tinubu loses FCT, Rivers, I’ll resign January 17 — Wike
Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will resign from his ministerial position if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, during an engagement with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja.
The former Rivers State governor said his decision was based on his belief that his continued stay in the Federal Executive Council should be linked to his ability to deliver electoral support for the President in the two areas he identified as his principal political bases.
According to Wike, the presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, and he would announce his resignation the following day if Tinubu fails to win in both Rivers State and the FCT.
“The presidential election is on January 16, 2027. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said.
Explaining his position, Wike said the FCT is where he currently works, while Rivers State is his home state, arguing that failure to secure victory for the President in either territory would amount to a failure on his part.
“FCT is where I work. Rivers is my state. If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” he said.
Wike also disclosed that a multi-party coalition was being assembled in the FCT ahead of the 2027 elections, with the stated objective of supporting candidates across different elective positions.
He expressed support for Tinubu’s presidential bid and also named former FCT senator Philip Aduda as the candidate the coalition is backing for the Senate.
Wike further said the coalition would support two House of Representatives candidates who, according to him, are former Area Council chairmen.
The minister’s comments came during an engagement with the Apo mechanics and traders, who have been involved in discussions with the FCT Administration over the proposed relocation of activities from the Apo Mechanic Village to Wasa.
Wike said the meeting represented a final affirmation of the political understanding reached with the group and reiterated his commitment to the coalition’s electoral strategy in the FCT.
The declaration adds a personal political condition to Wike’s publicly stated support for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, while placing particular emphasis on the electoral outcomes in Rivers and the FCT.
Wike served as governor of Rivers State from 2015 to 2023 before joining Tinubu’s Federal Executive Council as Minister of the FCT.
With the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, Wike’s stated deadline means that, by his own declaration, any decision to resign over the two states’ results would come on January 17, 2027.
