India lead Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos
India are setting the pace at the ongoing Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, topping the medal table with five gold, seven silver and 12 bronze medals as competition intensifies at Rugby School Nigeria, Atlantic City, Victoria Island.
The championships, being hosted by Nigeria for the first time, have brought together fencers from across the Commonwealth, with athletes battling for honours across various disciplines.
India’s impressive medal haul has placed them firmly at the top of the standings, while England sit second with two gold, one silver, and five bronze medals.
Cyprus and hosts Nigeria have also enjoyed gold-medal success, with Nigeria making history through Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson.
The Nigerian fencer claimed the men’s Under-23 épée title, delivering the host nation’s first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
Another significant milestone was recorded on the third day of action with the introduction of wheelchair fencing as an official medal event.
The discipline had previously featured only as a demonstration sport at the 2022 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in London, but its inclusion in the medal programme in Lagos marks a major step forward for para-fencing within the Commonwealth competition.
Nigeria is represented by a 12-member squad comprising six men and six women. The home team has faced strong opposition from established fencing nations including India, England, South Africa, Australia and Cyprus.
While the competition on the piste has provided the main attraction, the organisation of the championships has also received positive reviews from participating delegations.
Several teams have praised the Local Organising Committee for its handling of accreditation and logistics, contributing to a smooth experience for athletes and officials.
England’s Bethany Brierley, who struck gold in the women’s sabre event, also expressed her satisfaction with the championship experience in Lagos while highlighting the enthusiasm and potential of Nigeria’s young fencers.
With more events still to be decided, the battle for medals remains wide open as the Commonwealth Fencing Championships continue in Lagos.
