Justine Madugu lands two-year deal as Super Falcons head coach

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has confirmed that he has been offered a two-year contract by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), officially making him the team’s permanent manager until 1 October 2027.

Madugu, who took charge of the team in an interim capacity following the departure of Randy Waldrum, guided Nigeria to their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco in July 2025. He revealed the news of his permanent appointment shortly after the Super Falcons sealed qualification for the next WAFCON with a 1–1 draw against Benin Republic in Abeokuta.

“Just to clarify the situation, the NFF have offered me a two-year contract, effective from 1 October 2025 and ending on 1 October 2027,” Madugu stated during his post-match press conference.

While satisfied with the qualification, Madugu admitted that the performance against Benin Republic fell below expectations.

“The draw didn’t come as a surprise because we knew it was going to be a tough game,” he said.

“However, I want to apologise to Nigerians for not meeting their expectations. Each time the Super Falcons play, there’s always a high standard to meet. Sometimes, there can be off days, and today was one of those days.”

The coach described the match as a wake-up call for his team as they prepare for the 2026 WAFCON, which will also serve as the African qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

“We’re not too disappointed. We’re taking this as a reminder that more work needs to be done,” he added.

With qualification now secured, the Super Falcons will shift focus to defending their continental crown when the 2026 WAFCON kicks off from 17 March to 3 April 2026.

Nigeria will join other confirmed participants including Morocco (hosts), Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Malawi, Ghana, Kenya, Cape Verde, and Senegal, while four qualification spots remain open.
