Kwara United crowned 2025 President Federation Cup champions
Kwara United clinched the 2025 President Federation Cup title in dramatic fashion, edging out Abakaliki FC 4-3 on penalties after a goalless stalemate in regulation time at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
The Harmony Boys held their nerves in the shootout to lift the prestigious trophy and secure a spot in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.
Abakaliki FC, the surprise package of the tournament, had taken out heavyweights like Enyimba, Katsina United, Nasarawa United, and Ikorodu City en route to the final. They settled quickly into the contest and came close to taking the lead early on. Striker Okoro Chukwudi connected well with a delightful cross but failed to keep his header on target.
Kwara United responded with a chance of their own as Junior Aimufua saw his effort crash against the upright, ensuring both sides went into the break with the scoreline untouched.
The second half produced a few clear-cut chances, though there was a moment of celebration for Kwara United when former Enyimba forward Wasiu Alalade found the net, only to see the goal ruled out for offside.
With neither side able to break the deadlock, the contest was decided from the spot. Kwara United missed their opening penalty through Akanni Akeem but converted their next four. Abakaliki, meanwhile, faltered at the crucial moments, missing two of their final three kicks to hand the Ilorin-based side a 4-3 shootout victory.
