Morocco's water strategy sets benchmark for climate resilience in Africa
As the African continent grapples with intensifying climate change and mounting water stress, Morocco is emerging as a model of resilience and strategic foresight. Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, the country has adopted a comprehensive approach that blends large-scale infrastructure with innovative technologies to safeguard its water future.

National water reserves have now surpassed 1.3 billion cubic meters, a milestone that highlights the effectiveness of sustained investment in storage systems. These dams play a critical role in managing increasingly unpredictable rainfall, ensuring a stable supply of drinking water while supporting agriculture—a key pillar of the national economy and food security.
In parallel, Morocco is advancing more flexible solutions to address urgent local needs. The introduction of mobile desalination plants for both seawater and brackish water represents a major leap forward. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Equipment and Water under Nizar Baraka, these mobile units can be rapidly deployed to areas facing acute shortages. Their adaptability allows for immediate relief while permanent infrastructure is still under development, strengthening the country’s resilience against climate shocks.
