Morocco set unwanted WAFCON record against Senegal
Hosts Morocco endured a night of frustration after setting an unwanted record in their goalless draw against Senegal at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Monday.
The Atlas Lionesses dominated proceedings from start to finish but were unable to find a breakthrough despite registering 28 shots, the highest number recorded by a team that failed to score in a Women’s AFCON match since Opta began collecting the data in 2018.
Playing in front of an expectant home crowd, Morocco controlled possession, created numerous openings and repeatedly threatened the Senegalese goal. However, a combination of poor finishing, resolute defending and inspired goalkeeping denied the hosts what appeared to be an inevitable victory.
The statistic underlined Morocco’s dominance but also highlighted their profligacy in front of goal, as the tournament hosts became the first team in the Opta era to attempt as many as 28 shots in a Women’s AFCON match without finding the net.
While Senegal celebrated a valuable clean sheet against one of the tournament favourites, Morocco were left to rue a host of missed opportunities that could ultimately prove costly in the race for knockout qualification and group supremacy.
The record serves as a reminder that domination alone is not enough at major tournaments, with Morocco’s inability to convert their chances turning what should have been a statement victory into one of the most frustrating performances in Women’s AFCON history.
Regardless, the Atlas Lionesses progressed as Group A winners and will square up with 2022 champions South Africa in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
