NFF banks on Super Eagles' star power to keep Eric Chelle amid foreign interests
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) believes the strength and depth of the Super Eagles squad will keep head coach Eric Chelle focused on his job despite reported offers from other African national teams.
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau has played down growing speculation linking the Franco-Malian tactician with moves to countries such as Tunisia, Guinea, Angola and Mali, insisting that Chelle remains committed to Nigeria’s long term football project.
According to Gusau, the attraction of working with Nigeria’s vast pool of top-level players outweighs any financial incentives being discussed elsewhere.
Chelle enhanced his reputation after guiding Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, earning praise from supporters and strong backing from the squad.
His performance at the tournament has reportedly triggered interest abroad, with Tunisia said to be ready to table a significantly higher salary package.
However, the NFF maintains that contract stability and sporting ambition will prevail over money. Gusau stressed that Chelle still has a valid contract and that rival federations must wait until it expires before making any formal move.
He added that success for any coach depends heavily on player quality, suggesting Nigeria offers a more competitive platform than most suitors.
Since taking charge in early 2025, Chelle has overseen 18 competitive matches, recording 12 wins and six draws, though two of those stalemates ended in penalty shoot out losses.
Despite missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the NFF views his overall impact and AFCON run as strong reasons to continue with him as Super Eagles manager.
