Renaissance Sportive de Berkane clinches historic first Moroccan title

By Samuel Ahmadu

Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RSB) has made history, securing its first-ever Botola Pro title with five matches to spare.

The decisive moment came during the 25th matchday, as RSB triumphed over Union Sportive de Touarga (UST) at the municipal stadium in Berkane, cementing an unassailable 17-point lead over rivals AS FAR and Wydad Casablanca.

Founded in 1938 as Association Sportive de Berkane, the club underwent several transformations before adopting its current identity in 1981.

Despite glimpses of promise—including a runner-up finish in 1983 and a Throne Cup final in 1987—RSB struggled for consistency at the top level.

A turning point arrived in 2009 with the appointment of Fouzi Lekjaa as club president. Under his leadership, RSB underwent significant structural and financial reforms, including the construction of a modern training facility and the securing of key sponsorship deals.

The club’s rapid rise saw it earn promotion to Botola Pro in 2012, establishing itself as a force in Moroccan and African football.

RSB’s dominance has not been confined to domestic football. The club won the CAF Confederation Cup in 2020 and 2022, while also finishing as runners-up in 2019.

It claimed the Throne Cup in 2018 and 2022, turning its home stadium into a fortress where African powerhouses like TP Mazembe, Club Sfaxien, and Zamalek have faltered.

Following Lekjaa’s departure in 2019, new president Hakim Benabdellah maintained the club’s upward trajectory, refining its strategy to position RSB as a permanent contender for top honors in Morocco and beyond.

RSB’s first Botola Pro title marks the beginning of a new chapter. With a solid management structure, modern infrastructure, and clear strategic vision, the club now sets its sights on sustained success in Moroccan and African football.
