NPFL: Sporting Lagos stun Plateau United in Jos as rain halt Rivers United, Barau FC clash

Sporting Lagos staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Plateau United 3-2 in Jos, while heavy rainfall forced the suspension of Rivers United’s encounter with Barau FC as the 2026/27 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Week 9 fixtures produced thrilling action across the country on Sunday.

The Lagos-based side overturned a first-half deficit to claim all three points at the New Jos Stadium, with Jacob Aondona scoring the decisive goal in the 83rd minute.

Elsewhere, Kano Pillars edged Katsina United 1-0, Niger Tornadoes defeated Ikorodu City 2-1, and Nasarawa United recorded a 2-0 away victory over Inter Lagos. Enyimba and Warri Wolves played out a goalless draw.

Sporting Lagos secured one of the weekend’s standout results with a 3-2 victory over Plateau United at the New Jos Stadium.

Aliyu Baba put the visitors ahead in the 10th minute, but Plateau United fought back through Victor Dawa, who equalised in the 35th minute before scoring again in first-half stoppage time to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

Sporting Lagos returned from the break with renewed determination, and Victor Samuel restored parity in the 53rd minute.

The visitors completed their comeback in the 83rd minute when Jacob Aondona found the net to secure a valuable away victory.

Plateau United’s hopes of recovering were further dented when Alex Aghahowa received his second yellow card in the 80th minute, leaving the hosts with 10 men for the closing stages.

The result highlighted Sporting Lagos’ resilience as they recovered from a first-half setback to take maximum points on the road.

Rivers United and Barau FC could not complete their Week 9 fixture after heavy rainfall disrupted proceedings.

The match was suspended with the scoreline at 0-0, with the remaining 15 minutes scheduled to be played on Monday morning, October 19, from 8:00 a.m.

Both teams will have another opportunity to find a breakthrough when play resumes, with the outcome set to determine whether either side claims all three points or the encounter ends in a draw.

Kano Pillars secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Katsina United, thanks to Yahaya Ibrahim’s sixth-minute strike.

The early goal proved decisive as Pillars held on to secure maximum points in the north-west derby.

Niger Tornadoes also picked up three points after defeating Ikorodu City 2-1.

Nafiu Obalowu opened the scoring in the 27th minute before Bashir Musa doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 82nd minute. Basit Ayinde pulled one back for Ikorodu City in the third minute of stoppage time, but Tornadoes held on to seal the win.

Nasarawa United recorded an impressive 2-0 away victory over Inter Lagos, scoring both goals before the interval.

Kelechi Ogbodo opened the scoring in the 11th minute, while Ugochukwu Leonard added the second in the 40th minute.

Inter Lagos failed to respond, allowing Nasarawa United to leave with all three points.

Enyimba and Warri Wolves settled for a goalless draw, with neither side finding a breakthrough.

The result earned both teams a point, although Enyimba will be disappointed not to have capitalised on home advantage to secure a victory.

Week 9 action began on Friday, October 16, with Shooting Stars recording a 3-1 victory over Ranchers Bees.

Desmond Ojietefian opened the scoring in the 14th minute before Isah Ndala equalised for Ranchers Bees in the 38th minute.

Damilola Akinola restored Shooting Stars’ lead in first-half stoppage time, while Qamar Adegoke sealed the victory with a third goal in the 71st minute.

Saturday’s fixtures produced two 1-1 draws, with Kwara United sharing the spoils with Abia Warriors and Doma United drawing against Kun Khalifat.

Kwara United took the lead against Abia Warriors through Ferinyaro Ali’s 34th-minute free kick, but Emmanuel Nnaji equalised in the 52nd minute.

Kwara United subsequently missed an opportunity to reclaim the lead when Muhammed Alao struck the crossbar from the penalty spot in the 64th minute.

Meanwhile, the scheduled encounter between Rangers International and Bendel Insurance was postponed.
