NPFL banishes Katsina United to Jos after violent attack on Barau FC

The Nigeria Premier Football League has banished Katsina United to Jos and ordered them to play their home games behind closed doors, following a violent incident during their Matchday 12 clash against Barau FC on Saturday.

The match, which ended 1–1 after Uche Collins’ opener for Katsina United was cancelled out by Orji Kalu for the visitors, was marred by chaos in the second half. Around the 70th minute, Barau FC midfielder Nana Abraham was reportedly attacked, causing a temporary suspension of play. Though the game eventually resumed and ended normally, disturbing reports and videos shared online drew widespread condemnation.

In a swift response, the NPFL charged Katsina United with breaching multiple sections of the league’s Framework and Rules, citing failure to provide adequate security and control over their supporters.

According to the league’s statement, “Katsina United failed to provide adequate and effective security, resulting in unauthorised persons gaining access to restricted areas. The club also failed to ensure proper conduct of their supporters, who harassed Barau FC players and match officials, threw harmful objects onto the pitch causing injuries, and displayed behaviour capable of bringing the game into disrepute.”

As part of its ruling, the NPFL imposed heavy sanctions on the club:

"All remaining home fixtures will be played in Jos, behind closed doors. N1 million each for throwing objects, supporter misconduct, and bringing the game into disrepute, N3 million total. In addition, N2 million for failure to provide adequate security, N2 million each for compensation for player injuries and damage to the away team’s buses, as well as for detaining match officials and the away team after the match, N4 million total".

The club has been given 48 hours from the date of the notice to appeal the sanctions.
