NSC and FRSC strengthen their partnership to boost sports development
The National Sports Commission (NSC) aims to work closely with sporting groups to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s goal of improving sports nationwide. Mallam Shehu Dikko, the Chair of NSC, assured the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) of the Commission's willingness to collaborate on sports projects.
He made this promise while welcoming FRSC’s Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and his team during a visit to his office.
"We believe in working together and sharing ideas to grow sports in Nigeria. We also want to help sports organisations do more," he said.
Mallam Shehu praised the success of the FRSC female handball team, both locally and across Africa. He called the team an inspiring example of Nigeria’s talent in sports.
He reminded the Corps Marshal of an earlier agreement with FRSC's sports committee. The agreement suggested creating a Joint Committee to promote mutual support for sports development.
Dikko explained that NSC has set aside funds in its budget to help teams and clubs that qualify to represent Nigeria, especially those winning local leagues. He expressed the hope to support these teams further.
He also said that as a sports regulator, the NSC must assist teams competing internationally. The Chair promised to work with FRSC to form a joint team. This team could undertake small projects outside usual sports activities.
Dikko mentioned a traffic control problem during international matches at the national stadium. He asked FRSC to partner in solving this issue. The Corps Marshal suggested establishing a permanent FRSC unit at the stadium to manage traffic during events.
He also pointed out that the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is eager for the NSC and other organisations to work together to develop sports in Nigeria.
Earlier, Shehu Mohammed congratulated Dikko on his appointment. He also discussed ways FRSC can support and grow its sports teams.
He said sports are part of how his officers stay fit and healthy. He noted that sports help them serve Nigeria better, especially in road safety.
During the visit, the Corps Marshal sought advice and financial help from NSC where possible. He assured the FRSC’s full support to boost sports in Nigeria.
The visit ended with the presentation of a plaque to Dikko. The Corps Marshal also pledged to establish a permanent FRSC unit at the stadium for better traffic and crowd control during games and events.
